Artful Deception,is a work of historical fiction. It is based on the largest single art heist in history, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum robbery that occurred in Boston on March 18, 1990. Much has been written about the heist by various authors. Artful Deception is, however, incredibly unique and stands alone amongst all tomes on the subject. Why? Because it was written by the federal prosecutor assigned to the case in his capacity as Senior Advisor to the United States Attorney in Massachusetts in 2005.

They came like thieves in the night. Or did they? An apparent art heist of historic proportions, deemed barbaric by art lovers, it is and remains the largest Old Master theft ever. A real who-dun-it in the city of Boston. Identified by the Federal Bureau of Investigation as “In re Thirteen Priceless Works of Art.” By a single act, a stoned college punk with an affinity for nose candy, Bob Dylan and acid rock, one of two overnight watchmen babysitting Hundreds of Millions of Dollars’ worth of art during the misty, early morning hours of March 18, 1990, resulted in the theft of thirteen priceless works of art; including REMBRANDT’S only seascape, “THE STORM ON THE SEA OF GALILEE” and VERMEER’S “THE CONCERT”. With the push of a button, the Museum in the Fens lost part of its soul that morning when it was brutally violated by two men dressed as Boston police officers; sadly, so did the young FBI agent who entered Mrs. Gardner’s beloved museum that fateful morning.

Artful Deception is an insider’s story of the investigation of that robbery and the FBI agent assigned to the case, South Boston native, Edward “Ted” McGrath (protagonist). Inspired to become an FBI agent after meeting Director Hoover in Washington DC on his thirteenth birthday, McGrath, a larger than life character, is persuaded to come out of retirement to team up with Assistant United States Attorney Amy Fowler (a feisty fireplug) ; Summer Intern Katherine Savage (McGrath’s beautiful and intelligent thorn in his side antagonist ; FBI Agent Bryan Mullen (McGrath’s inquisitive, pragmatic replacement) and Anthony Fenore (the dogged, unrelenting Director of Museum Security) to provide them with an incredible historical perspective of his decades’ long Quixotic quest to return the stolen works to the quaint Museum in the Fens.

On many levels, Artful Deception is a story within a story. It’s not just about the robbery. It is about grievous loss, dedication, perseverance, integrity, loyalty, trust, deceit, rascality and dishonor. It also reveals the foibles of humans on both personal and professional levels. All of McGrath’s demons, warts and scabs are exposed leaving him a defeated and bitter man. He drinks too much, is lonely, estranged from his two daughters and, lives his life with a constant pathological, dreaded fear, a fear worse than death, that he has been a complete and utter failure as an FBI agent, husband, father and, God-forbid, SON. His return to Boston from retirement is fueled by a burning desire to once and for all solve the case, redeem his professional reputation and in doing so, bring down several highly placed federal law enforcement officials. The native son is also feverishly, desperate to rekindle his relationship with his children and grandchildren and, finally…finally make his parents of Hibernian decent, PROUD. It’s also a story about the FBI and Director Hoover’s mandate articulated in the 1950s to “crush the Italian mob at all cost” and how the feds in Boston attempted to carry out that mandate with the likes of Jimmy “The Tooth” and Frankie “The Shanks “. Artful Deception is a fascinating, fast-paced adventure story, turning what appeared to be simply a Fool’s Errand into an incredible masterpiece of detective work, told by the federal prosecutor who lived it.

ARTFUL DECEPTION THE ISABELLA STEWART GARDNER MUSEUM ROBBERY edition by James McGovern Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

Having lived in greater Boston most of my life, and being a frequent visitor to the Gardner Museum, this mystery has always intrigued me. The author presents a clear account of the events as well as the nefarious activities of the FBI. Unlike other novels of this nature, the story is told in a clear and concise manner and his revelations of Boston's darker side provided an interesting sidelight. The event was very well researched, resulting in an informative and entertaining read. I look forward to the author's next venture.

ARTFUL DECEPTION THE ISABELLA STEWART GARDNER MUSEUM ROBBERY edition by James McGovern Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Just finished reading Mr. McGovern's first novel and I loved it! Being an avid mystery lover and a resident of both Boston and Sanibel Island, I found his colorful descriptions right on the money. Fast-paced and with an insider's knowledge of law enforcement and the judicial system, the story is both credible and entertaining. Kudos to Mr. McGovern and I look forward to his next endeavour!
What a great story teller the author is! As a native New Englander, the museum theft is one of our great unsolved mysteries! A good read, easy to follow, a must have for beach, flying or the like! Can't wait for the movie!
A very well crafted and detailed look at English landed aristocracy as the Age of Industrialization begins to overtake and reshape their world;
Ok
I loved this book, partly because I am from Boston & followed the crime at the time. I do recommed this book. It is one of the best novels regarding the Gardner robbery. Enjoy this book!
This is a very entertaining and enjoyable book. For those of us in Boston who know something of the story, it does a great job of filling in the blanks, letting us imagine about what the investigators were and are thinking, feeds our conspiracy theories, and gives us a very plausible end scenario. The character of McGrath is a Boston classic, gruff, cynical but yet still dedicated to his job, even while being undercut. The story artfully (no pun intended) plays on the cynical realities of the local FBI office that real events have portrayed. Very much enjoyed it and now can't wait to see how close the real outcome is to this story.
The book arrived okay but somewhat dirty on the outside pages when the book is closed. I wrote twice with a request about the authors signature at the front of the book, and twice received no response.
